The Benefits of Sports


The United States offers limitless opportunities to engage in a variety of sports. Early in colonial North America, Native American peoples played team sports. Some Native American games can be considered early forms of lacrosse. European games brought to North America in the 17th century led to the development of typical American sports. These games were refined and re-created in the 19th century. The United States now has over 200 different types of athletic contests and many social rituals have emerged around them.

Playing sports is a great way to build social skills. Students learn how to work as a team and become emotionally strong. They learn to accept the consequences of failure and celebrate victory. In addition, sports foster a positive attitude that never gives up. This is an important attribute in life. While these sports can be stressful and intimidating, they are designed to be motivating. Sports can help kids develop positive attitudes and develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

Some sports are played exclusively by disabled people. This type of sport is an adaptation of an existing sport. While not all disabled sports are adapted, some do not have an able-bodied equivalent. As such, they often feature elements of other sports. Most multisport events include components of athletics, such as triathlons, tetrathlons, pentathlons, and motorized sports. However, the number of spectators for these games is still far from mainstream sports.
